Waste-free City

A waste-free city utilizes modern technologies, renewable and sustainable resources, prevents waste generation and uses circular economy principles which creates healthy relationships between nature and human society. It motivates citizens to ecological and frugal behaviour.

Total waste production in Prague

This graph shows a comparison of the annual waste production in Prague, including construction waste. The expected trend in the coming years will be to increase the production of bio-waste that can be further used, thereby reducing the amount of municipal waste that is mainly used for energy recovery in the ZEVO Malešice incinerator. In 2022, 256 thousand tonnes of mixed municipal waste were produced by Prague households in black bins at their homes.

The graph shows a comparison of annual dispatches of collection companies for separated waste (SW), mixed municipal waste (MMW) and trade waste.

Utilisation of alternative fuel collection vehicles - vehicle kilometres travelled

In terms of the number of all collection vehicles and alternative fuel vehicles, this graph shows a comparison of the number of annual vehicle kilometres driven by all diesel and alternative fuel vehicles. Due to the discontinuation of one environmentally friendly vehicle, the number of vehicle kilometres travelled by alternative fuel vehicles has decreased compared to 2021.

Utilisation of alternative fuel collection vehicles - vehicle numbers

The graph shows a comparison of the total number of collection vehicles and eco-friendly collection vehicles (alternative fuel vehicles). The share of alternative fuel vehicles in the total number of collection vehicles is again lower than in the previous year. The number of alternatively fuelled collection vehicles varies continuously in relation to the purchase and removal of obsolete equipment.

Amount of sorted waste per capita collected at sorted waste sites

The graph shows a comparison of the amount of individual waste components sorted in kg per capita in each year. Of the total 443.0 thousand tonnes of waste generated in Prague households, mixed municipal waste is still the most represented, accounting for approximately 58%. Each resident of the capital city of Prague sorted a total of 20 kg of paper, 15 kg of glass and 13 kg of plastics in 2022.

Reuse points at collection yards

Reusing things is much more crucial to reducing waste than recycling. In 2022, it was also possible to drop off various items such as furniture, books and sports equipment in the five permanent collection yards. In 2022, the number of reuse points in the city increased from three to five.
